Behind the Scenes at Orfève
Every chocolate has a story. And every story begins somewhere.
Before becoming a Geneva-based chocolate manufacture known for its precision and high standards, Orfève was a small artisanal project, driven by little means, but great conviction.
Our very first bars tell that story: they already had a signature pattern, but no glossy shine.
What they did have, though, was essential: flavor, intention, and respect for the raw material.
The very first bar: silicone mold, home kitchen
Our very first chocolate bar was molded… in our own kitchen in Geneva, in 2016.
From the very beginning, we knew we didn’t want to use generic molds. We needed something that would reflect our identity, no ready-made, personality-free templates.
To create a signature bar without committing to large supplier volumes, we commissioned a custom silicone mold. It was simple and flexible, practical in format, but unflattering for the chocolate.
What we didn’t realize: silicone molds produce a matte finish.
No matter what we did, the bars had no shine.
And from day one, that bothered us.
We felt that the visual envelope didn’t do justice to the care we put into working with the beans. Even though we were still in the testing phase (refining recipes, adjusting roasts, exploring aromatic profiles), one thing was clear: the form had to match the substance.
So, very early on, we chose to invest in custom professional molds.
Not to “look good”, but to express what we wanted to say: chocolate with depth, form, and presence.
Second generation: sleek… but unfinished
Our second generation of bars looked entirely different. They had a professional finish and shine, but still no pattern.
The new molds gave us the gloss we were looking for, but the completely smooth surface, visually neutral, soon revealed its limits. Bars often showed unsightly release marks after demolding.
These surface imperfections clashed with our standards. They didn’t do justice to the nobility of the cacao, the precision of our process, or the experience we intended for the person tasting it.
A great chocolate deserves a design that respects its nature, the maker’s touch, and the eye.
Our current bar: a natural evolution, true to our vision
These early trials are part of our memory. They taught us that flavor alone isn’t enough, shape, light, and visual texture also influence the tasting experience.
That’s how our current bar was born: flat, fine, graphic, and defined by the Clou de Paris pattern. Not to seduce. But to reveal.
This motif, borrowed from traditional Swiss watchmaking, is no decorative flourish. It’s a geometric relief designed to capture light, structure the surface, and guide the eye. On a dial, it sharpens legibility. On a bar, it highlights purity, grain, and clarity.
By integrating it into our molds, we carried that same commitment to clarity and functional elegance. Clou de Paris is not an ornament, it’s a signature.
A quiet affirmation that chocolate, too, deserves attention to detail and intelligent craftsmanship.
Orfève’s Approach
Looking back on our early bars is a way of honoring the path we’ve taken.
It’s a reminder that every detail counts, form, light, how it feels in the hand.
Our beginnings were humble. But they already carried the essence: the will to do things right, not just good.
Even our archives tell that story. A pursuit of precision, of coherence, of respect.
So that every bar, from the start, lives up to the cacao it embodies.
