A bit of History
Before it was considered a treat, chocolate was long prescribed… as medicine. Since its arrival in Europe in the 16th century, cacao has attracted medical attention, sometimes based on fact, sometimes on curious beliefs. So, what did doctors of the past say about chocolate’s virtues?
A “Medicinal Food” from the Start
Brought back from Central America by conquistadors, cacao quickly piqued the curiosity of European scholars.
Rich, energizing, and mysterious, it was first viewed as an exotic substance with medicinal properties.
As early as the 17th century, Spanish, Italian, and French physicians praised its effects:
-
aiding digestion,
-
countering melancholy,
-
boosting mood,
-
and even strengthening the heart.
Some called it an elixir of youth. Others prescribed hot chocolate to convalescents or weakened women.
Between Humoral Medicine and Colonial Pharmacopoeia
At the time, medicine was still heavily influenced by the theory of the four humors. Practitioners sought to balance the body’s internal “temperatures,” and cacao, classified as “hot and dry”, was seen as an ideal remedy for cold or melancholic temperaments.
Over time, spices were added to boost its effects: cinnamon, vanilla, pepper, nutmeg, anise… Chocolate became a genuine potion, sometimes sold in pharmacies.
A Lasting Recognition… Then a Shift
In the 18th century, chocolate remained highly regarded by enlightened physicians. Diderot’s Encyclopédie described it as a “healthy, nourishing food, apt to stimulate the mind.” It was prescribed to intellectuals, convalescents, and frail children.
But by the 19th century, rising concerns around diet and morality cast doubt on chocolate: too sweet, too fatty, too stimulating? Opinions diverged.
It wasn’t until the 20th century, with the rise of modern nutrition, that cacao’s benefits (antioxidants, magnesium, theobromine…) were reassessed in a more scientific light.
