Small Truths About Chocolate
It’s a common question: does chocolate contain caffeine, like coffee or tea? And if so, how much? Should it be avoided in the evening? Is it safe for children? To answer these questions accurately, we need to understand the natural composition of cacao, and the differences between dark, milk, and white chocolate. Because yes, chocolate does contain caffeine, but that’s only part of the story.
Caffeine or Theobromine: Two Different Stimulants
Cacao naturally contains two substances from the methylxanthine family:
– Caffeine, also found in coffee, tea, and maté,
– Theobromine, an alkaloid specific to cacao, and its primary stimulant.
Theobromine acts more slowly than caffeine, offering a gentler but longer-lasting effect. It promotes alertness without the spike often associated with coffee. So while chocolate contains a little caffeine, it contains much more theobromine.
How Much Caffeine Is in Chocolate?
It depends on the cocoa content. Here’s a rough estimate:
-
Dark chocolate 70% (with 7–10% added cocoa butter): around 20–25 mg of caffeine per 50 g,
-
Milk chocolate: around 5–10 mg per 50 g,
-
White chocolate: virtually none, as it contains no cocoa solids.
By comparison:
-
One espresso: 80–100 mg of caffeine,
-
Black tea: 40–60 mg,
-
Cola: 30–50 mg.
So even a high-quality dark chocolate contains far less caffeine than a cup of coffee. It’s unlikely to affect sleep, unless you’re very sensitive.
Should You Avoid Chocolate in the Evening?
For most adults, one or two squares of dark chocolate in the evening won’t cause any issues. For children or those sensitive to stimulants, it’s best to enjoy chocolate earlier in the day, or choose a variety with lower cocoa content.
It’s not just the caffeine that may affect sleep, but potentially:
– Theobromine (a gentle stimulant),
– Excess sugar (depending on the recipe),
– Fat digestion, which may slow metabolism at night.
A pure, low-sugar chocolate, enjoyed slowly, is easier to digest and offers subtler stimulation.
Orfève’s Approach
At Orfève, we work exclusively with fine origin cacao beans, with no added caffeine, no flavorings, and no additives. Our bean-to-bar bars are naturally rich in theobromine, but moderate in caffeine.
Thanks to their refined profiles, low sugar content, and unique textures (ultra-thin for Noir de Noir, crunchy for Brut de Noir, and dense for Noir de Fruits), they’re ideal for balanced tasting without a strong stimulating effect.
An Orfève square isn’t a jolt, it’s an invitation to slow down.
